What to Pack for Your Melbourne to Lebanon Trip

By Airways Travel

Most Australians flying to Lebanon already know someone there. It is usually a family or community trip, not leisure travel.

But the packing side of things is where people get caught out, especially on a journey that can take 19 to 26 hours with at least one transit stop.

Documents and Entry Essentials

Before travelling to Lebanon, check the Australian Government's current advice at smartraveller.gov.au. As of mid-2026, Smartraveller advises Do Not Travel to Lebanon due to armed conflict, civil unrest, and terrorism.

What Australians Need to Enter Lebanon

Australian citizens can get a visa on arrival in Lebanon. Your passport must have at least six months' validity beyond your intended stay, along with at least two blank pages for the visa stamp.

Pack these in a waterproof document holder:

  • Australian passport (valid for 6+ months beyond your trip)
  • Return flight itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation or a host's contact details
  • Travel insurance documents (printed copy recommended)
  • Emergency contacts

Clothing for Lebanon Trip

In Beirut and Coastal Cities

In Beirut, both men and women can dress much like they would in Mediterranean Europe. Jeans, dresses, and smart-casual outfits are the norm.

Lebanese people in Beirut are fashion-conscious. Wrinkled or overly casual clothing stands out. Clean and neat is the baseline expectation.

For women, light summer dresses, linen trousers, and blouses work well in warmer months. For men, chinos or jeans with a shirt are a solid everyday choice.

At Religious Sites

When visiting mosques, women must cover their heads, arms, and legs. Men should wear long trousers. Shoes are removed before entering. At churches, modest attire covering shoulders and knees is respectful for both men and women.

Outside Beirut

In rural villages and religious towns, covering shoulders and knees is expected. In areas like Tripoli or conservative parts of the south and the Bekaa Valley, modest clothing is non-negotiable, especially for women.

Packing list for clothing:

  • 3 to 4 casual tops (light fabrics for summer, layering options for other seasons)
  • 2 pairs of trousers or jeans
  • A lightweight midi skirt or loose linen pants (versatile for women)
  • 1 lightweight scarf (essential for religious sites and conservative areas)
  • Swimwear if visiting coastal resorts
  • Comfortable walking shoes with closed toes (Beirut footpaths are uneven)
  • 1 light jacket or cardigan (for evenings and air-conditioned spaces)

On the Melbourne to Lebanon flight, you will always transit through at least one hub, most commonly Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Doha. For a journey this long, your carry-on packing matters as much as your checked bag. Bring a neck pillow, noise-cancelling earphones, a change of clothes, and any medication you need for the flight in your hand luggage.

Health and Medical Essentials

See your GP or a travel medicine clinic at least four to six weeks before departure. This is especially important given Lebanon's current situation.

The CDC recommends that all international travellers be fully vaccinated against measles with the MMR vaccine, as cases are rising globally. Confirm you are up to date before travelling.

If your trip includes outdoor activities, use insect repellent and cover exposed skin, as mosquitoes and other insects can spread diseases in Lebanon.

Bring a solid first aid kit that includes:

  • Prescription medications in original packaging (carry a letter from your doctor)
  • Pain relief and anti-inflammatory tablets
  • Rehydration sachets (heat exhaustion is a real risk in summer)
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+)
  • Insect repellent (DEET-based is most effective)
  • Antidiarrheal medication
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Do not rely on tap water in Lebanon

Electronics and Power

Australia uses Type I plugs (the angled flat pins). Lebanon's standard voltage is 220V-230V at 50Hz, which is compatible with Australian appliances.

Lebanon uses a mix of socket types, with Type C (Europlug) being the most common, along with Type D and G in some buildings. A universal travel adaptor covers all bases.

Buy a universal travel adaptor before you leave Melbourne. You can pick one up at most electronics retailers or at Melbourne Airport's duty-free shop for around $20 to $35.

Also worth packing:

  • A portable power bank (power outages in Lebanon can be frequent, and keeping your phone charged matters for safety)
  • A universal SIM or international roaming plan (Lebanese SIM cards are available at the airport, but can take time to activate)

Safety and Practical Add-Ons

Given Lebanon's current security situation, these items are practical necessities:

  • A small portable torch or headlamp (for power cuts)
  • Enough cash in USD (the Lebanese pound has been unstable, and USD is widely accepted)
  • A printed emergency contacts list, not just a digital one
  • A small radio or offline maps downloaded before arrival

Smartraveller advises Australians in Lebanon to keep identification and travel documents secure and accessible, maintain a go-bag with essential items in case of emergency, and follow local news closely.
